No matter your age, gender, race, or nationality, most of us know that mental health is a top priority. We can oftentimes see the different trending hashtags on social media. However, we’d never really know how to cope with such issues except those who are actually dealing with them.

Our mental health affects the way we think, feel, and behave. In short, it’s somehow responsible for our way of living. From our different relationships and how we interact with others. These can somehow serve as signs of how our mental well-being is actually doing.

The sad reality about it is that mental disorders are one of the causes of most disabilities. To add to that, most people who suffer from such conditions aren’t even aware of what they’re going through.

Why Is This Happening?

There isn’t really a proper test that can show whether one is experiencing such issues or not. This is why it’s best to watch out for some early indications. Changes in your eating and sleeping behavior can already be a sign. Losing motivation in the things you do, straying away from your friends and family, and many more.

Financial status can also be a trigger in some cases. Nowadays, prices of all goods and services continue to spike and show no sign of going down anytime soon. This certain problem mainly applies to those in the marginalized sectors. The pressure of trying to sustain their daily necessities eventually takes a toll on their mental state and becomes too much to bear.

However, you might wonder why those who have more than enough suffer from depression and other illnesses. Well, this proves that these disorders can stem from many other factors. So what will happen if we stop prioritizing our mental health? Well, there are numerous possibilities.

What The Numbers Say

Just last 2017, about 11.2 million adults residing in the U.S. experienced illnesses that are psychological-related.

The World Health Organization (WHO) noticed that the global population is aging faster than usual. As we age, mental disorders have a higher possibility of happening. More than 20% of adults aged 60 and above suffer from such illnesses.

On a global scale, about 5% of this age group experiences dementia, while another 7% suffers from depression.

What Can You Do?

As mentioned, these disorders can affect anyone regardless of age. However, the causes and effects can differ. Some people opt to enter health care homes because of mentally-related illnesses. Over time, with the proper care and health plan, their quality of life improves for the better.

Another point is that because as time passes, we will eventually start getting weaker. That thought itself frustrates some adults. Later on, this will slowly affect their mental health.

This retirement period changes almost their entire lifestyle. Put yourself in their shoes. You’d have to give up most of what you’re used to and start adjusting to a different way of life.

Some might choose to isolate themselves, which won’t do them any good. If you or someone you know is experiencing such issues, you shouldn’t need to worry.

Not everyone can take care of their loved ones, and that’s understandable. What matters is that we make sure that their well-being and the environment they’re in is safe.

One option is hiring a private nurse. If you can’t be there 24/7, then this is something that you should consider. They are experts in that certain field, so they will treat every patient differently. What’s better is that no one will have to leave home. In that way, you still get to be with your loved one.

Another option is to look for retirement homes around your vicinity. Whether you’re living in the busy streets of New York or by the Bay Area, you’re sure to find a home healthcare center. You can discover special programs that will cater to every patient’s needs. This might even help one’s welfare since they’re in the company of someone their age.

However, nothing can compare to the comfort of being with your loved ones. If the chances permit, spend as much time as you can with the people close to you.

The bottom line is that you should always make sure to take proper care of yourself. Mental disorders are real and continue to happen. Any time you’d feel like you need to take a break, never hesitate to do so.
