The Habits You Need to Add to Your Day so You Can be Healthy at Work

An estimated 28% of Americans, or about 80.2 million people, do not participate in any physical activity beyond the basic movements necessary in their everyday life. In short, many do not perform the exercises they need, which increases their risk of experiencing adverse health conditions.

For many, inactivity is caused by working at an office where they sit in front of the computer for hours on end, sometimes even the entire workday. If you want to live healthier, even inside the office, here are some things you can incorporate into your every day:

Do Some Stretching

You probably have experienced leaving work at the end of the day with a stiff neck or sore muscles. When you spend a prolonged period of time in an often awkward and uncomfortable position, this is bound to happen.

Stand Up and Go for a Walk

Take a few minutes throughout the day to leave your desk and walk. Ideally, you should be able to take a stroll around the office or in a nearby park every hour for at least five minutes. This will not only keep you healthy, but it will also lift your mood and fight lethargy.

Standing for at least 30 minutes a day can also cut your risk of illnesses associated with sitting too much. A standing desk is a common way for office workers to continue working without having to take a seat.

Drink Water

When you are focused on your work, it is easy to forget to drink water. Health experts recommend eight to 10 glasses per day. There are free apps you can download that will keep track of your drinking habits and remind you if it is time to get hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle to the office that you can keep on your desk so you can take a sip when you are thirsty.

Pack Healthy Snacks

The snacks available in offices, especially when there is a party or celebration, are often unhealthy. Instead of munching on a doughnut in the middle of the day, appease your hunger by snacking on fruits or nuts. This will not only keep the extra weight off, but it will also keep you feeling energized until it is time to go home. A doughnut, on the other hand, will leave you sleepy and exhausted before the day ends.

Take the Stairs

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator will add to the number of physical activities you had throughout the day. If you cannot go to the gym regularly, the stairs are the next best way to keep your muscles warm and your heart pumping.

Of course, you should incorporate these healthy habits in your regular routine. Your body needs regular exercise and proper diet to be at its optimum condition. If you do not take care of your body, you will be at risk of experiencing mental and physical ailments or, worse, premature death.
